Man City Fans Face Reality After Financial Rule Breach Verdict
Manchester City appear to have been found guilty of most of the 115 financial rule breaches they faced. Following charges brought in February 2023 concerning the Premier League's financial rules, a decision was reportedly delivered Friday, sending shockwaves through English football. The club has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has indicated an intention to appeal if found guilty.
Long before the current era of Abu Dhabi ownership, Pep Guardiola, Premier League titles, and the Champions League, supporters were the core of the club. Managers and players move on, but fans remain through all circumstances. Now, they must confront potential sanctions, which could range from points deductions and financial penalties to expulsion from the Premier League.
Three years ago, City was charged and referred to an independent commission regarding alleged breaches spanning from 2009 to 2018. During this period, the club secured three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and three EFL Cups.
David Mooney, a Manchester City fan and contributor to the Blue Moon podcast, expressed shock and bewilderment. "I imagine as time goes on it will just come with a tinge of disappointment, more than anything else. It is a really weird feeling to process," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. He described the conflict between the enjoyment of unprecedented success and the underlying perception of cheating or illegitimate achievement. Mooney believes City fans are victims, having had their feelings used, while experiencing a decade of success that now confronts a harsh reality.
While the current generation of City fans has only known success, older supporters recall the team playing in the old Division Two, competing against clubs like York City and Oldham Athletic. Decades later, City boasts one of the world's top strikers, Erling Haaland, who achieved 100 Premier League goals faster than any player in history. The team currently leads the league, having won all five of their opening games, with their next match a trip to face Liverpool at Anfield.
Another fan, Matt, speaking on 5 Live, stated, "I think I need therapy now. It has escalated over the last few hours. It's so hard to be a die-hard Blue." He noted the decision has been made without a formal appeal or club statement. Recalling moments like Paul Dickov's goal in Division Two and celebrating success, he mentioned a club song about "going down with a billion in the bank." He affirmed that if titles are stripped or points deducted, "we will fight until the end." He added, "You go through the good times and the hard times. We have to go to Liverpool and it's going to be very interesting to see how we react. We boo the Champions League anthem, well what about the Premier League?"
After narrowly losing to Chelsea in the 2021 Champions League final, City finally secured the coveted trophy by defeating Inter Milan two years later. For many, this was an unforgettable "I was there" moment.
Season ticket holder John, who was in Istanbul for the 2023 final, stated on 5 Live, "That will never be taken away from me, regardless of what's been decided in the court or elsewhere along with the Premier League."
Fellow supporter David Wilson told BBC News, "You will never take away all the memories of all those moments and trophies from City fans. Those will live on regardless what happens over the next weeks, months and years." He highlighted that fans who experienced the club in lower divisions will remain loyal. Wilson also expressed a desire for an explanation regarding the prolonged process if the club is found guilty. He concluded, "True City fans, and fans who have been there all their lives, will still love the club dearly no matter what other people say."
