Giovanni Malagò, president of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), has spoken out against the violence and intimidation targeting referees. Recent incidents in Campania, Calabria, and Sicily have prompted a strong reaction from Malagò, who stated that such actions are incompatible with the core values of sport.

"I cannot and will not remain silent after the events of the weekend," Malagò told ANSA. "Violence and any form of intimidation towards referees are incompatible with the values of sport and the very idea of football we aim to build. Our sporting movement faces several issues, but protecting those who ensure rules are followed must be a systemic priority."

He emphasized that this is not just an issue for refereeing but a matter of dignity and respect for individuals and their roles within the sporting community.

Malagò also commented on the Italian national team's recent victory under Roberto Mancini. "Winning in such a complex climate, with the entire stadium behind them and young players, suggests this is just the first step, and there's light at the end of the tunnel," he said. "It was a good evening from many perspectives. I've never experienced such an atmosphere at a national team match, with support from every section of the stadium, but the players were excellent."

He highlighted the performance of debutant players as a source of hope. "There is much work to be done, but the team spirit is very good, and Mancini is doing his part, as is Ranieri," Malagò added. "We are pleased and will move forward, even though the upcoming schedule is challenging. Playing France will not be easy, but we must accept it."
