Gvardiol Returns to Form at Left-Back for Manchester City
Gvardiol’s attacking contributions don't overshadow his defensive strength.
Last Sunday at Old Trafford, he was instrumental in City’s unexpected win, maintaining a clean sheet even after Phil Foden’s red card in the 23rd minute.
Gvardiol effectively neutralized Bryan Mbeumo for much of the match, winning nine of his eleven duels – more than any other player on the pitch. He also made a match-high four tackles among City players.
This season, he ranks seventh among all Premier League players for duels won and is in the top 10 for tackles made.
His consistent form has kept Algerian international Rayan Ait-Nouri, signed last summer from Wolves, from playing in his preferred left-back position. Maresca has instead deployed Ait-Nouri further up the field.
Gvardiol had a challenging outing against Porto in the Champions League, receiving a booking in the first half and being substituted early in the second. However, this appeared to be an isolated off-day rather than a cause for significant concern.
He committed his long-term future to City this summer, signing a new five-year contract despite interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
The defender expressed his happiness at extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium, noting that under Maresca, “everyone has to fight for their position, no-one is secure.”
However, if Gvardiol continues his strong start, his place will be secure.
