Moyes Expects More from Everton, Shuns European Talk
David Moyes returned to Everton in January 2025 with the team sitting 16th, just one point above the relegation zone. He has navigated rising expectations and pointed to the club's improvement since his reappointment.
"Last year was not good," Moyes commented, refuting criticisms as "absolute baloney." He highlighted the team's significant achievements with limited resources, nearing a remarkable feat while on the brink of relegation and facing the challenges of a new stadium. "We came really close," he added.
Former England midfielder and BBC pundit Danny Murphy noted that David Moyes' teams are consistently well-organized, motivated, and dangerous when under pressure. He acknowledged fan discontent regarding ownership and a perceived lack of attacking reinforcements. However, Murphy emphasized the team's strong defensive balance and tactical discipline. "The backline with the keeper behind it is really solid," he stated. He added, "They're so well organised and defensively so good, they're always going to nick results when they're not playing well." Murphy understood fan frustration but didn't see the team in danger, despite a "thin squad" with quality.
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford told BBC Sport that the recent result provided a positive end to this segment of the season before the international break. The team's next league match is on October 11th against Hull City.
"You have to dig in, that's the Everton way," Pickford said. "We are building momentum and we will be focused and ready to go when we come back. It was a great way to finish the week off."
Regarding striker Barry, who scored eight times last season but now appears more threatening, Pickford commented, "He works hard and the goals will come from working hard. The first year in the Premier League is always tough. He has found his feet and he has started a lot better this year."
"It's always good to finish with a win, especially before a long international break," Pickford concluded.
