Why Ronald Araujo Moved to Liverpool and Barcelona's Struggles

Ronald Araujo joined Barcelona from Uruguay in 2018 and quickly became a prominent figure, making over 200 appearances for the Catalan club. He concluded the previous season as captain, participating in 38 matches for Hansi Flick's team during the 2025-26 campaign.

Hansi Flick recently commented in a press conference, stating, "He is a very good person and an exceptional player, but our style of play is slightly different. He is a footballer with great speed and power, and he is good with the ball at his feet, too. I wanted to get him involved; I think he is eager to try new things, and I believe he has also been affected by what happened in the past. I said goodbye to him this morning and saw that he was happy. Liverpool is a great club, and I wish him the best. You have to accept it."

The "past" Flick alluded to likely includes several high-profile instances where Araujo's errors drew significant criticism. His red card against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2024 Champions League quarter-finals was a pivotal moment in his Barcelona tenure, as his dismissal contributed to PSG gaining the upper hand in the tie. He also faced considerable backlash for mistakes made in the second leg of Barcelona's 2025 Champions League semi-final loss to Inter Milan, a situation where Flick publicly supported him.

In the previous season, during Barcelona's 3-0 away defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League, Araujo was sent off just before halftime after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Marc Cucurella. A week later, he was granted a leave of absence to focus on his mental well-being, receiving professional support and treatment for his emotional health. He returned a month later, featuring in 23 matches in the latter half of the season, and started in six of those games.

The transfer also presents a financial advantage for Barcelona. The club has been aiming to secure a substantial sale to alleviate financial strain. While this is a loan deal with an option to buy, Liverpool will cover Araujo's entire salary for the season. As one of Barcelona's highest earners, this represents a significant cost saving for the Catalan club.
