A surreal Sunday for Formula 1 unfolded at Sepang, the venue for the Bahrain Grand Prix. The race start was disrupted not only by rain but by a software problem affecting the new power units. This situation prompted the FIA to issue an update distributed to all cars.

During the formation lap, run behind the Safety Car due to wet conditions, several cars suddenly lost power. Max Verstappen slowed, reporting accelerator issues via radio, while Lewis Hamilton was forced to stop his Ferrari.

FIA Statement

Following the race, the FIA released a statement to clarify the situation: "During the formation lap preceding the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, an unprecedented combination of low engine revs, low grip, energy management settings for wet conditions, and the specific sector configuration of the Sepang circuit caused an unintended loss of power for several cars."

The statement continued, "Consequently, the FIA Technical Department removed the energy limitation in the affected sectors via a software update distributed to all competitors during the race suspension caused by heavy rain, allowing teams to make necessary adjustments to the Power Unit before the start. This issue had not been detected by the FIA or the teams during testing or during the laps approaching the starting grid. The FIA, along with the teams and Power Unit manufacturers, will conduct a thorough analysis of the problem."
