Mei Praises Italy's "Fierce Determination" at European Athletics Championships
Stefano Mei, President of FIDAL (Italian Athletics Federation), expressed his immense satisfaction with the Italian team's performance at the recent European Athletics Championships. He noted a significant change in the sport compared to his own competitive days 40 years prior, observing a "fierce determination" in the Italian athletes.
Mei considered the success in Birmingham to be even more impressive than the home victory in Rome in 2024. "It wasn't easy to repeat after Rome, when we were playing at home," Mei stated in an interview with Sky Sport. "In Birmingham, it was more difficult, but we managed to prevail on English soil."
He further elaborated on his unwavering belief in certain athletes, mentioning Gianmarco Tamberi and Nadia Battocletti. "I was one of the few, as Gimbo himself said, who always believed in Tamberi, even before these European Championships and even if he was struggling. He is an alien, like Nadia Battocletti," Mei added, praising their exceptional talent.
