Sergio Brio: 70 Years of Humble Juve History - A Worker Stopper Who Won Every Possible Trophy

Sergio Brio celebrates his 70th birthday on August 19th, marking seven decades of a football career that evokes a unique and romantic era. When you think of Brio, you envision a bygone, different kind of football. The former Juventus defender is remembered as a robust, strong, essential, and dedicated centre-back, who transformed marking into a tough job, meant for a select few. In his own words, he was like a "bricklayer in a team of architects." That team was Juventus, the club to which Brio's name is indelibly linked.

After his spell at Pistoiese, he returned to Turin in the late seventies and became a cornerstone of a legendary defence, playing alongside champions like Gaetano Scirea, Claudio Gentile, and Antonio Cabrini. Brio never sought flashy plays. His strength lay in his pragmatism, his aerial prowess, and his ability to read and anticipate danger. With Juventus, he won four Scudetti, three Coppa Italia titles, the European Cup, the Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Cup, the European Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup. He achieved all five major international club trophies of that era, joining an elite group of players to have accomplished this feat (now numbering six).

Sergio also won another UEFA Cup as assistant coach to Giovanni Trapattoni during the 1992/1993 season.

'At Juve, I Grew as a Player and as a Man'

Brio also served as captain of "La Vecchia Signora," a testament to the trust he earned in the locker room and on the field. Despite his significant contributions, he never played for the senior national team, with only eleven appearances for the Olympic squad to his name. This is a modest tally for a player who led the defence of one of the strongest teams in Italian football history. Often labelled as tough, he was sent off only once in his career. He amassed 243 appearances and scored 16 goals in Italy's top flight, all for the black and white club. In 2011, Juventus honoured him with a commemorative star on the Walk of Fame at the stadium.

Since 2024, Brio has also officially become a Juventus Fan Ambassador, a role that connects the club with its affiliated fan clubs, symbolically uniting the club with its vast and borderless fanbase. For Brio, a Juventus fan since childhood in his native Lecce, this is "a huge gift from this club," because "Juventus was fundamental to my growth, as a player, but above all as a man." These are the words of a stopper.
