Former Juventus Youth Player Quits Football at 20, Writes Heartbreaking Letter
A dream that was within reach has faded. In the world of football, it's common for young players to nurture the ambition of becoming professionals, perhaps even reaching the highest levels, only to have to abandon it for various reasons. This is precisely what happened to the young Alfredo Pepe. He began his journey in the youth system of Juventus before trying to forge his path elsewhere. Now, he has made the definitive decision to bid farewell to his greatest love: football.
From Juventus to Hanging Up His Boots
In an extensive letter posted on social media, Alfredo Pepe shared his story and the reasoning behind his decision to retire. "Talented, but unfocused," he wrote. "I heard this phrase about myself so many times. Everyone I met offered their judgment. I heard it all: 'With that mindset, you'll go nowhere.' 'Learn to work; football isn't for you.' 'You failed in school, you'll fail in sports and life.' I could go on forever. Today, I stand here because all those voices had meaning in my career and my life. From birth, the ball was always at my feet, and I never stopped for anything. I had one dream, in my head and heart. I made sacrifices daily, giving up my life and peace for that dream. I sacrificed my body, my mind, and my health pursuing it, but sacrifices aren't always rewarded."
"Only I Know What I Endured"
The letter continued: "I met wonderful people who always believed in me and still try to help me. Yet, at the same time, I encountered those who didn't live up to that word. Only I know what I endured, how strong I was to get back up after every fall, how much I suffered at night thinking I wouldn't make it. Only I know how hard I was on myself when I couldn't do it anymore, when I had no strength left, but I always tried again with a smile. 'But it didn't show,' they told me."
