Cristiano Ronaldo Details Confrontation with Coach Jorge Jesus
Despite Portugal securing the top spot in their group and mathematically qualifying for the Nations League quarterfinals, the Cristiano Ronaldo-Jorge Jesus dispute continues to be a hot topic in Portugal. Today, the footballer issued a statement, again criticizing the coach: "Jorge Jesus went back on his word."
"This is the truth about what happened with Jorge Jesus. As promised, I've decided to recount, in my own words and directly, the events that marked the national team's last training camp. After the 2026 World Cup, I had prepared a letter for the Portuguese people, which I still keep, with the words I wanted to share when I definitively left the national team. At the end of the competition, on the flight back from the United States, the Federation president urged me to reconsider my decision to leave, as the FPF wanted me to continue," wrote CR7.
"He then asked my opinion on the current coach's name, whom he was considering along with other candidates he didn't reveal. I told the Federation president that, in my view, it would be the right choice. Therefore, on the day the current coach was introduced, I was genuinely pleased with the selection. It was the right decision, as the results confirm," added Ronaldo.
Ronaldo's Statement
"A few days later, I had my first contact with the new national team coach, who expressed his desire for a personal meeting. I agreed, and we scheduled it for the end of my vacation. We met at the Cidade do Futebol, where my team was conducting its pre-season training camp. On that day, the coach told me he was counting on me and that my presence was crucial for his project. He then presented me with a plan for my participation. He said I would play the first and last games, and for physical management reasons, he would always make three or four substitutions per match."
"At that point, he proposed the possibility of not traveling with the national team to Norway and Denmark. His suggestion was to play the first match and stay in Portugal, rejoining the squad before the game at Do Dragão. I immediately rejected this proposal. It seemed obvious I couldn't accept it. It wasn't because I wouldn't play the away games that I would stop being the team captain. That privilege of staying in Portugal wouldn't set a good example. The coach ultimately agreed with my assessment. Simão Coutinho, Al Nassr's sporting director, who the current coach has referenced throughout last season and is partly responsible for his hiring by the club for 2025, was present at this conversation," clarified the Portuguese star.
Ronaldo: 'This is What Happened'
"On the evening the training camp began, the coach came to my house in Lisbon, at his request, for another discussion. The conversation was calm, and everything we agreed upon in August was confirmed. I played the match at Alvalade, and although I was substituted, I made no fuss. I personally handed the captain's armband to Bruno Fernandes, far from imagining that this could be my final act as a player and captain of the National Team," the statement, as reported by Iberian press, continues.
"That day, what mattered to me was our victory. Winning is always good; in Portugal and for my country, even better. At lunch, on the day of the match in Norway, a coach's assistant approached the table where the squad was dining and informed me that the coach wanted to speak with me. To my great surprise, the coach asked if I was fit to play 30 minutes. I was completely focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and I thought I wouldn't play that day. Without any issue. This request was outside my recovery and training schedule, as I was only scheduled to play on the 4th at Do Dragão, but of course, I said yes. He responded that I should then be ready as I would play 30 minutes. The rest, everyone knows. I warmed up from halftime, watched the minutes pass, and was not called upon to enter the field," explained Ronaldo.
